1.    How do I tilt my windows in for cleaning?

The most important thing to remember when cleaning your double hung windows is to make sure you slide the bottom sash up a few inches. This will clear the bottom rail of the window and prevent damage to our windows. After you have raised the window, push in the latches on the top of the window sash and gently pull toward you. This will tilt the bottom sash of the window in.

After you clean the bottom sash, leave tilted in and pull the top sash down several from the the top and again, push in the latches on the top of the window sash and pull toward you. This will allow you to clean the top sash inside out. When you have finished cleaning it, just push it back until it clicks in place and slide the sash all the way back up to the top. Then proceed to do the same thing to the bottom sash. It’s as easy as that.

2.    My window came out of the opening. How do I put it back in its opening?    

Most brands of windows can be easily put back into the frame without needing professional help.  First, familiarize yourself with the window sash and the metal rods that protrude from each side of the window sash base.

The window lock[s] & tilt mechanisms should be located on the top of the window sash. Holding onto the window sash in an upright position pivot the top of the window towards you until it is horizontal.  Tilt one side of the window higher than the other then insert the lower sash side rod into the window ‘shoe’ [lift and tilt mechanism located in the track on each side of window].  Then drop or hook the opposite rod into it’s receiver channel.  Twist the window so that both mechanisms are even in their tracks and the window is flat.Tilt the window sash in an upward fashion until it locks back into place.   

3.    Why do windows fog or sweat on the interior ?

Air is composed of several gases, one of which is moisture vapor. When air comes in contact with the dew-point temperature, that air is chilled and condensation takes place with a residue of water on the surface of the glass. Condensation is the result of excess humidity or excess water vapor in the air coming in contact with a cooler surface such as a window. When humidity conditions are extremely high, use the following suggestions to help reduce the moisture in the air:

*  Open windows frequently to air out your home.

*   Use exhaust fans in your kitchen, laundry and bathrooms

*   Vent gas burners, clothes dryers etc to the outdoors

*   Lower your furnace humidifier setting and other humidifying devices..

*   Be sure that the ventilating louvers in your attic, basement or crawl spaces   

    are open and amply sized.

4.    Will my New Windows eliminate condensation ?

Actually, no.  Condensation is moisture vapor suspended in the air and that’s something no one can guarantee to eliminate.  However, incorporating quality vinyl windows with warm-edge technology glazing will help to reduce condensation because they’re less thermally conductive than other window types.  The help keep the temperature of the window warmer, minimizing hot and cold differences that turn moisture into condensation.

5.    What are U-Values and R-Values ?

A U-Value represents the amount of heat that escapes through a wall, window, roof, or other surface. The lower the U-Value, the more energy efficient the given material is.


R-Values are the direct opposite. These measure an object's resistance to heat flow. The higher a material's R-Value, the lower its U-Value, the less energy it will lose. R-Value in a window depends on the number of layers of glass, the type of gas between those layers, and whether one or more of those layers has been treated with a Low-E coating.

6.    What is Low-E glass?  

Low-E glass has a non-visible, microscopic layer of silver sandwiched between layers of anti-reflective metal oxide coatings for greater energy efficiency and comfort. Low-E stands for low emissivity. Low-E glass reflects the part of the light spectrum that transmits heat, and in turn decreases a window's U-Value and increase its R-Value.

7.    How to I Clean my Canvas Awning ?

Occasional hosing will prevent dirt accumulation.  Most dirt accumulation can be removed by soap and water with a soft scrub rush, rinsing thorough.  Material should be thoroughly dry before prolonged storage.

8.    Can I use my Retractable Awning when it rains?

Retractable awnings are primarily designed to protect you from the damaging and harsh rays of the sun.  These products are not designed for rain protection; however, they can be used in drizzle or misting rains with the proper pitch.   They should not be used when strong winds are present.  in heavy or driving rains, the must must be retracted to avoid water from pooling on the fabric and causing damage or irreversible fabric stretching.

9.    What happens to Retractable Awnings in the winter?

Awning are self-storing when retracted.  You should make sure that the awning has been brushed clean of debris and is dry before retracting.  The canvas retractable fabric roll should

be covered in an aluminum shroud [model dependent] or wrapped in a plastic ‘cover’ to protect the fabric from squirrels and chipmunks who like to nest during winter months..

10.    How do I wash vinyl siding?

Wash vinyl siding with a soft cloth or ordinary long-handled, soft bristle brush. For textured surfaces, use only a soft bristle brush to keep the grooves in the texture stain-free. For best results, start at the bottom of the house and work up and rinse the cleaning solution completely before it dries. If your house has brick facing, cover the brick so that it is not affected by the runoff.

Can I use a power washer?


Yes, though you should read the washer instructions carefully before use. When cleaning, hold the power washer straight at eye level to keep the water on top of the siding where it can clean most effectively. Do not aim the power washer upward as water may be driven behind the siding.

You should also follow the siding manufacturer’s recommendations.  Some manufacturers don't want pressure washers used on their products at all.  Others allow them, but have limitations on the amount of pressure and the cleaners that can be used.  Most will caution against the use of pressure washers around any opening in the wall, such as windows, doors, electrical wiring, and plumbing.


How do I remove mold and mildew?

Small spots of mold and mildew can be handled with cleaners such as Fantastik® or Windex®. For larger sections, a solution of vinegar (30%) and water (70%) has proven successful. Alternatively, you also could try the following solution: 1/3 cup (2 2/3 ounces) powdered laundry detergent (e.g., Tide®, Fab®, or equivalent), 2/3 cup (5 1/3 ounces) powdered household cleaner (e.g., Spic & Span®, Soilax®, or equivalent), 1 quart (32 fluid ounces) liquid laundry bleach, and 1 gallon (128 fluid ounces) of water.
